Christian Matthews

  • Youth (WIOA)

When Christian Matthews visited the SEMCA Michigan Works! Wyandotte American Job Center, he was facing an uncertain future. He had recently been laid off from his job as a laborer, earning $17/hr, while preparing to welcome a new baby into his growing family.

Christian expected he would eventually be called back to work, but returning to the same position wasn’t enough. He wanted to develop new skills, increase his earning potential, and create greater financial stability for his family.

Through the SEMCA Michigan Works! Youth program, Christian began working toward his CDL-A credential with support from his Career Coach, Ann Baker. Together, they developed a plan to build his skills and prepare him for greater opportunities when he returned to work.

Skills assessments showed that Christian could benefit from additional support in reading and math. He received an education skills referral and resources to strengthen those areas while continuing toward his CDL-A goal.

In May 2026, Christian started CDL-A training at Suburban Truck Driver Training School. Balancing classes, studying, work responsibilities, and family life wasn’t easy. His Career Coach stepped in, helping him find resources to strengthen his time-management skills and stay on track.

His hard work paid off. In June 2026, Christian earned his CDL-A credential.

Soon after, he returned to work with more than a new credential. His new skills helped him earn a promotion, increasing his wage from $17 to $23/hr—an important step toward providing for his growing family.

“The program has opened more doors and has given more opportunities to make more money to be able to provide for my family.”

Christian continues to work toward removing his remaining basic-skills barrier and building on the progress he has made. He’s also encouraging others to explore the opportunities available through SEMCA Michigan Works!.

“I’ve already mentioned the program to a handful of my friends and family. Thank you so much!”

For Christian, earning his CDL-A was about more than adding a credential to his resume. It provided a path to new opportunities, higher wages, and the ability to provide a stable future for his growing family.

I think this version feels more like a success story than a program summary—the reader gets Christian’s challenge, the turning point, the work he put in, and the tangible result without repeating the same ideas.
