When Annette Williams was laid off from her job as a Lab Technician at RJ Marshall in October 2023, she was earning $22/hr and facing the uncertainty that comes with an unexpected job loss. But rather than let the setback define her, Annette saw an opportunity to grow.

She visited the SEMCA Michigan Works! Southgate American Job Center in search of a new direction—one that would offer greater stability and a path to long-term success. With an interest in healthcare and a desire to find meaningful, in-demand work, Annette expressed interest in phlebotomy training.

Based on her goals and eligibility, SEMCA Michigan Works! enrolled her in the WIOA Dislocated Worker Program in February 2024. With support from her Career Coach and funding assistance through the program, Annette began training at Phlebotomy Career Training in Dearborn in April.

She excelled in her classes, remained focused and driven, and successfully completed the program by August 2024—earning her certification and opening the door to a brand-new career.

Just days after completing her training, Annette accepted a full-time position with the American Red Cross as a Phlebotomist. Although she was also offered a role with Corewell Health, she followed her instincts and chose the job that felt like the best fit. And her decision paid off. Six months later, she received a $1,200 bonus and a raise, bringing her hourly wage to over $19.

“I love my job. Thank you, SEMCA Michigan Works! and the Dislocated Worker program, for assisting me in getting back on my feet in a field I love,” Annette shared.

Annette’s story is a reminder that career setbacks don’t have to be the end of the road. With personalized support, new skills, and the right resources, it’s possible to start again—and thrive.
