Daniel Kemp
- Employment Services
When Daniel Kemp arrived at the SEMCA Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center on January 5, his immediate priority was getting assistance filing for unemployment benefits and completing his required work registration. As he worked through the process, another challenge became apparent: Daniel had limited computer skills, making it difficult for him to navigate the online systems he needed for unemployment and his upcoming job search.
A Career Coach worked with Daniel one-on-one, encouraging him as he learned. What initially felt unfamiliar quickly became manageable. With practice and support, Daniel learned to navigate the unemployment system on his own and was soon completing his bi-weekly unemployment certifications independently.
Once he became more comfortable using the computer, Daniel began using available resources for more than just managing his unemployment claim. Using the center’s computers, he began to search for jobs and explored opportunities that could help him determine what he wanted to pursue next.
Daniel also took advantage of several free career readiness workshops offered at the center. He continued to strengthen his technology skills while also learning how to create a stronger resume and better present his experience and skills to potential employers.
These experiences gave Daniel more than just practical tools for his job search. They helped him explore a variety of career options and set new goals for his next opportunity. Instead of simply moving on from a job loss, he used the experience as a chance to build skills and prepare for his next job.
Through the combination of one-on-one guidance, career workshops, and access to free resources, Daniel was able to overcome barriers that initially stood in his way. He secured a new job quickly and moved forward with skills and knowledge he can continue to use throughout his career.
Daniel’s experience shows how a visit to SEMCA Michigan Works! can become more than a single service or resource. What began with filing for unemployment became an opportunity to learn new skills, explore possibilities, strengthen his job search, and take the next step toward his future.
Daniel shared, “I not only appreciate and respect the staff at SEMCA Michigan Works! for all their help, but I would recommend everyone use the resources offered!”
