Luis Aguilar’s story begins in Mexico, where he built a foundation through years of hard work as a painter, construction worker, and professional driver. He graduated from Sistema Educativo Nacional in Guadalajara and carved out a life defined by dedication and resilience. But when Luis and his family relocated to metro Detroit in search of greater opportunity, he found himself starting over.

His CDL-B license from Mexico wasn’t valid in the U.S., and the language barrier made navigating new systems feel impossible. Despite piecing together work through self-employment, Luis longed for something more—for the stability of a full-time career and the pride that comes from doing what he loved: driving.

Determined to build a better future, Luis walked into the SEMCA Michigan Works! Wayne American Job Center. There, he met Career Coach Janice Norwood, and everything began to change.

Janice saw in Luis what he had always known about himself: he was capable of more. He was enrolled in the WIOA Adult Program in September 2024, and together they began removing the roadblocks in his path. With help from interpreter services through Language Line, he could finally understand the steps he needed to take to reclaim his career.

His first goal: earn a Michigan CDL-A license.

After researching training providers, Luis chose All Star Truck Driving School, impressed by their willingness to support him in his native language. He began training in November, and from day one, he made an impact. His instructors admired his determination, his classmates respected his work ethic, and Luis pushed forward every day, fueled by the vision of a brighter future for his family.

By January 2025, Luis had earned his CDL-A license. Just 12 days later, he accepted a full-time job with Sysco as a local truck driver, earning $25 per hour and turning his dream into reality.

“SEMCA Michigan Works! really gave me the confidence I needed to be successful in my career at Sysco,” Luis said. “I’m so thankful for the guidance and support.”

Luis’s journey is a powerful reminder that when you have the heart to keep going—and the right support system beside you—nothing is out of reach. No matter where you begin, a new road is always waiting.
