Lora Canty

Relocating from Louisiana to Michigan, Lora Canty was on a journey to restart her life. Despite holding a Bachelor of Arts from Ashford University, she was working just a few days a week as a dishwasher to make ends meet, all while caring for her autistic son. Managing his care brought constant challenges; the school frequently called her to pick him up whenever he struggled, especially when his medication schedule didn’t align with the school day.

In October 2022, Lora took a brave step and visited the SEMCA Michigan Works! Wayne American Job Center. She attended a Food Assistance Education & Training (FAE&T) orientation and met Career Coach Suzan Tayeb. Together, they mapped out a plan to overcome the obstacles standing in her way. One breakthrough came when her Career Coach suggested she ask her doctor to adjust her son’s medication schedule so he could stay at school all day—something that seemed impossible at first but worked. Even while living in a two-bedroom apartment with her daughter, grandchildren, and son, Lora remained focused on what she could control.

When the family business where she worked suddenly closed, leaving her unpaid for her last paycheck—many would have given up. Lora instead threw herself into her career goals, refining her resume, sharpening her interview skills through mock sessions, and receiving interview clothing that gave her confidence to walk into every opportunity with pride. Her determination paid off when she landed a full-time role with Detroit Public Schools as an Academic Interventionist, guiding students through learning challenges and leading her own classroom, and earning $22.98/hour.

Even after her time with SEMCA Michigan Works! ended, Lora kept in touch and provided updates on her progress. Faced with more hurdles, including nearly two years living in a hotel at $500/week, she never wavered. Through sheer perseverance, focus, and gratitude, Lora achieved what so many dream of—homeownership. Her journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and hope. Reflecting on her path, Lora shares her guiding principle:

“Keep focusing on success and give thanks for all things!”

Lora’s story reminds us that no matter the obstacles, determination and the right support—dreams can become your reality.
