In December 2023, Tiarra Calhoun began a transformative journey by joining the PATH program at SEMCA Michigan Works! Highland Park American Job Center (AJC). Armed with determination and a desire for self-improvement, she eagerly attended the program’s workshops, each one a stepping stone towards her goal of financial stability.

During the initial stages of the PATH program, Tiarra participated in workshops focused on refining her resume, setting achievable goals, and honing her job search skills. Through these sessions, she not only acquired tangible skills but also gained clarity about her career aspirations. With the guidance of experienced mentors and the support of fellow participants, Tiarra crafted a polished resume, set forth her goals, and took career assessment tests to pinpoint the ideal career path for her unique skill set and interests.

Tiarra’s commitment to her job search resulted in success sooner than expected when she secured a position with Kroger in January 2024. Her diligence and proactive approach not only impressed her employers but also earned her recognition in the form of TSS incentive milestone gift cards, a testament to her exceptional performance and dedication.

Despite her relatively short period with the Highland Park AJC, Tiarra’s experience provided invaluable lessons and newfound confidence. Reflecting on her journey with SEMCA Michigan Works!, she shares a poignant quote that captures her philosophy: “Your life does not get better by chance; it gets better by change.” With this guiding her every step, Tiarra is prepared to continue her journey towards self-sufficiency and financial stability, armed with the skills and determination to overcome any obstacle that comes her way.
