Ryder Mulherin’s journey is one of metamorphosis and growth. Ryder was struggling—failing multiple classes, grappling with a low GPA, and uncertain about his future. With no prior work experience and little confidence in his abilities, he wasn’t sure how to turn things around.

Ryder found guidance and support from the SEMCA Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center through the Youth Opportunity Program (YOP), ultimately finding a new path forward.

During the summer of 2024, he gained hands-on experience through a paid work experience at a landscaping company, where he developed many practical skills and learned the value of hard work. This opportunity not only boosted his confidence but provided the motivation and focus to improve academically as well. By his senior year, Ryder had significantly raised his grades, improved his attendance, and was passing all his classes.

A defining moment in his journey came when he was accepted into the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Career Technical Education (CTE) program. This milestone not only solidified his career aspirations but gave him a renewed sense of purpose and direction. Now, with graduation in sight, Ryder plans to pursue college studies in EMT, Paramedic/Firefighter Certification, or Criminal Justice—all while continuing his passion for wrestling at the collegiate level.

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out,” Ryder shares, quoting Robert Collier. Thanks to his determination to create a better future and the resources available through SEMCA Michigan Works!, Ryder is on his way to reaching his goals and prospering.
