When Salvatore Cusumano first arrived at his local SEMCA Michigan Works! American Job Center (AJC) in May 2024, he lacked many essential job search skills. He didn’t know how to navigate a computer, create a resume, download or upload documents, use a flash drive, or complete online job applications. However, with the dedicated assistance of SEMCA Michigan Works! staff, Salvatore’s story took a remarkable turn.
Salvatore had recently earned his CDL-A license and wanted to change careers after spending over 20 years as a Construction Services Manager, earning $22.99 per hour. The SEMCA Michigan Works! team helped him build a new set of skills, starting with how to create a profile and apply for jobs on leading career websites. Salvatore learned to search for open positions, create a professional resume, and upload it during the application process. Over time, he became proficient in using the computer, managing his email, and customizing his resume for each new opportunity.
Having not interviewed in over two decades, Salvatore needed help preparing for a truck driving job interview. He enrolled in our free “Interview Like a Pro” workshop, where he practiced strategies to ace the interview. Armed with confidence and his newly acquired skills, Salvatore successfully landed the truck driver position, earning $25 per hour.
After receiving support and attending workshops, Salvatore not only secured a new job, but he also gained the knowledge and skills to continue navigating the modern job market. With nearly two months in his new role, Salvatore’s successful transition from Construction Services Manager to CDL-A Truck Driver proves that shifting careers is not only achievable but can lead to even greater personal and professional rewards.
