For years, Marc Thom worked long hours in landscaping, putting in the effort, but barely making ends meet. Together, they created a plan to help Marc pursue a career in commercial driving—something he had always dreamed of doing. But before he could start training, Marc needed to complete key steps: earning his CDL-A permit and passing a DOT physical. With encouragement and guidance, Marc checked every box.

Soon after, he was enrolled in CDL-A certification training at 160 Driving Academy. In just four weeks, Marc had completed the training and earned his Commercial Driver’s License—a huge milestone and a turning point in his life.

Results came fast. Within a week of completing the program, Marc was hired by Amazon Freight as an over-the-road driver. He now earns more than $27 an hour—a living wage that allows him to provide for his family and move toward true self-sufficiency.

But for Marc, this transformation was about more than just a paycheck.

“This opportunity has changed my life,” he said. “I love what I do, and I still get to spend time with my family. I’m truly grateful to SEMCA Michigan Works!.”
