At 27 years old, Misty Peete faced significant challenges. She was unemployed, pursuing a demanding master’s degree program to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and raising two young children, ages 4 and 1, without access to affordable childcare. These obstacles threatened her ability to complete her education and embark on a meaningful career. Seeking support, Misty turned to SEMCA Michigan Works!.

Recognizing that childcare was a primary barrier, Misty’s Career Coach guided her through applying for financial assistance programs. She also received resources and tools to locate certified childcare providers, including a comprehensive guide to evaluate potential facilities. With this assistance, Misty secured full-time childcare, enabling her to focus on completing her education.

Using financial aid to cover tuition, Misty progressed through her studies and successfully earned her degree—a pivotal step toward achieving her career goals. However, new challenges arose. She needed financial support to obtain her LPC licensure and address a vehicle registration issue. SEMCA Michigan Works! provided funding to cover both her licensing fees and vehicle registration, eliminating these barriers.

While waiting for state approval of her LPC license, Misty explored temporary employment opportunities and decided to register as a substitute teacher. SEMCA Michigan Works! stepped in once more, covering her registration fee. This proactive approach ensured Misty maintained stability as she transitioned toward her career goal.

Misty’s perseverance and SEMCA Michigan Works!’ support culminated in her starting full-time employment as a guidance counselor at The Guidance Center in Southgate.

Reflecting on her journey, Misty shared, “Communicate with your coach about what is going on with your situation so they can help you as much as possible. They will do everything they can to help you reach your goals and get you the extra help you need.”

Today, Misty thrives in her role as a counselor, equipped with the tools and confidence to support others. She continues to benefit from the childcare arrangements she established, ensuring she can balance her professional and personal responsibilities. Misty’s story is a testament to resilience and determination, highlighting the transformative impact of the programs and resources available through SEMCA Michigan Works!.
