Taji Fraser Totonju

  • Food Assistance Employment and Training (FAE&T)

For Taji Fraser Totonju, finding meaningful employment was about more than just a paycheck—it was about building a stable foundation for her future. Her journey began with the Recovery Advocacy Warriors (RAW) program, which partners with SEMCA Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center (AJC) to host Recovery Works, a monthly workshop designed to support individuals in recovery by fostering community and providing vital resources.

Through RAW, Taji connected with the Monroe AJC and enrolled in the Food Assistance Employment & Training (FAE&T) program in October 2024. She was paired with Career Coach Cari Grahl, who worked closely with her to address barriers, set goals, and secure the support she needed to move forward.

Taji knew she wanted a part-time job that would allow her to maintain her sobriety while doing something she truly enjoyed. She shared her love of cleaning and hoped to find a role that matched her skills and interests.

As Taji worked with her coach, a promising opportunity arose. Trinity Lutheran Schools was looking for a part-time janitorial worker, a role that aligned perfectly with Taji’s strengths. Excited about the possibility, she worked with SEMCA Michigan Works! to refine her resume and submitted it to the Trinity Lutheran Human Resources department. Shortly after, she was invited for an interview.

In December 2024, Taji officially started her new role, working 20 hours per week at $13.06 per hour—exactly what she had hoped for. To ensure her success, SEMCA Michigan Works! provided crucial support, including new work attire and transportation assistance, covering both a monthly bus pass and gas cards.

Reflecting on her journey, Taji shared:

“There are multiple ways that SEMCA Michigan Works! has helped me shape my future. One of the most impactful has been working with Cari. I had a vision of my perfect job but no experience in that field. She helped me recognize my strengths and translate my past work history into a resume that aligned with my goals.

I still can’t believe I found a job that fits my life so smoothly, with an employer who supports my recovery by allowing flexible hours for my meetings. This job is a stepping stone—I’m now working toward my Associate Degree at Monroe County Community College to become a Teacher’s Aide and continue making a difference in the Monroe community.”

Her employer, Richard Hackbarth, Facilities Manager at Trinity Lutheran Schools, praised her dedication:

“She consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic to help keep our facility clean. Her polite and positive attitude shines through. She is an invaluable team player, and I’m glad to have her aboard.”

With the right support and unwavering determination, Taji found more than just a job—she found a fresh start, a renewed sense of confidence, and a path toward a brighter future.
